The route of health and friendship

The Parenzana is a renowned bike route in Istria that follows the path of an old narrow-
gauge railway line that used to connect the region’s towns in the early 20th century. The
railway, named Parenzana after the Italian name for the town of Poreč (Parenzo), operated
from 1902 to 1935, linking the coastal towns of Poreč and Trieste, passing through
picturesque countryside and charming villages along the way.

Today, the Parenzana route has been transformed into a popular cycling and hiking trail,
offering a unique opportunity to explore Istria’s stunning landscapes, historical sites, and
rural charm. The route spans approximately 123 kilometers (76 miles) of which: 13 km in
Italy, 32 km in Slovenia and 78 km in Croatia.. It can be divided into several sections,
allowing cyclists to customize their journey based on their preferences and fitness levels.

Cycling along the Parenzana, riders are treated to breathtaking views of vineyards, olive
groves, rolling hills, and quaint villages. The route meanders through tunnels, over bridges,
and past old railway stations, providing a nostalgic glimpse into the region’s transportation
history. Along the way, there are numerous points of interest, including cultural and historical
landmarks, such as the Viaducts of Livade and Motovun, the charming town of Grožnjan with
its artistic vibe, and the scenic Mirna River valley.

Don’t be scared of the kilometers and enjoy the ride through nature and history, it’s a once in
a lifetime experience as every day is special as it is. Or ride it more than once to discover all
of a handful of kilometers through amazing countries, their environment and their culture.
