Novigrad in Istria is a hidden gem

Croatia’s Novigrad emerges as a hidden coastal jewel that masterfully combines history, culture, and natural beauty. It is located on the picturesque western coast of Istria. Novigrad provides a real Istrian experience that is seductive and unforgettable with its beautiful old town, breathtaking waterfront, and vibrant culinary scene. Enter the enchanted world of Novigrad, where history and the sea collide and traditions thrive.

City walls and old town

Novigrad’s roots date back to ancient times, evident in its historic architecture and remnants of past civilizations. The town’s historical core, enclosed by well-preserved medieval walls, invites visitors to step back in time and wander through narrow cobblestone streets. The 13th-century Lapidarium Museum showcases a collection of stone monuments, sculptures, and inscriptions that bear witness to the town’s rich history.

Only a portion of the defensive walls that originally entirely encircled Novigrad’s historic center have survived today. The fortification was built when the Venetian emperors arrived in the 13th century. During the turbulent struggle between the two powerful Italian ports for dominance on the Adriatic in 1270, Novigrad was compelled to openly recognise Venice’s control. The comprehensive fortification of the city came afterwards. There are also assumptions that the medieval walls were built on much older, ancient foundations.

The Church of St. Pelagius and St. Maximus, with its graceful bell tower, stands as a symbol of Novigrad’s spiritual heritage and offers a panoramic view of the town and coastline from its elevated position.

Istrian Gastronomy

Istria is renowned for its culinary offerings, and Novigrad is no exception. The town’s restaurants and konobas (traditional taverns) serve up an array of dishes that celebrate local ingredients and flavors. Istrian truffles, fresh seafood, and olive oil take center stage in dishes that showcase the region’s rich gastronomic heritage. Don’t miss the chance to savor homemade pasta and indulge in Istria’s famed Malvazija wine, perfectly complementing the local flavors.

Novigrad, with its historic charm, coastal allure, and vibrant culture, stands as a testament to Istria’s diverse and captivating offerings. Whether you’re strolling through its ancient streets, savoring its culinary delights, or simply basking in the beauty of the Adriatic, Novigrad offers a truly immersive experience that captures the heart and imagination.
